(Alex Mero)

Millions of Americans participate in the annual obsession that is fantasy football. Friends, family, co-workers and acquaintances all fight to be crowned champion after Week 16 in the NFL.The obsession is often misunderstood. Even though so many people compete, it聮s merely a hobby, something extra on the side of their NFL plates, like green beans. Some people really like collecting trains. Others prefer rare coins or spend their time in a 聯productive way.聰 For others, like myself, fantasy football is a bonafide obsession. From scouring through magazines in the summertime to pulling an all-nighter on Draft Day聮s Eve, I live, breathe and eventually freak out with fantasy football. This past week marked my league聮s Super Bowl, and on the line was more than just a hefty payday, but bragging rights among friends and people I once shared a beer (or two) with.If you laugh with contempt at the fantasy diehards, I beg you to read my 27-hour blog of my championship match 聴 a roller-coaster of nerves, thrills and overreactions.Saturday, Dec. 228:59 p.m.: A 44-yard bomb to Roddy White. In no way am I sad to admit I am more committed to fantasy football than any girl in my life. From draft day, to setting your line up every Sunday morning, to championship weekend, it聮s a challenge to be what we all aspire to be 聴 coaches. Everyone wants to run their own football team, and with fantasy football you are a modern day Vince Lombardi, your own head coach-general manager-penultimate decision-maker 聴 much like Jerry Jones.I have basked in championship lore in the past. For the second consecutive year, though, I have fallen shy of finishing as top dog. Again, I聮m on the wrong side of a Reese Witherspoon Rom-Com; this guy never gets the girl. Always a best man, never a groom 聴 a contemporary version of the 聭90s Bills. But if you think the fight is gone in this dog, you, my friend, are surely wrong. And I聮m not calling you Shirley. This summer, the research begins again. Another year, another crop of players and a new set of expectations, exhilaration and 聴 just maybe 聴 gratification. Page

Andie Anastos always knew this day would come.Sooner or later, she knew she would have to choose between the two loves in her life: basketball and hockey. She knew it wouldn't be easy, and it wasn't.In basketball, Anastos is a high-scoring point guard for Livonia Ladywood -- she is a matchup nightmare because she's stronger than anyone assigned to guard her.In hockey, she is a high-scoring center on the Honeybaked U-19 team, and she played well for Team USA against Canada last summer."I love playing both," she said, "and I just didn't want to stop."So this winter Anastos might be the busiest teenager in the state as she bounces between basketball and hockey, often attending two practices a day, as she has done for the last several years. But she knows this will be the last time.It was college coaches who chose her sport for her.A year from now Anastos will be a freshman on the Boston College women's hockey team."It just came down to colleges looking at me," she said. "And I could not say no to that."Few athletes can say no to a scholarship offer from prestigious -- not to mention pricy -- Boston College, and Anastos didn't.But don't think for a moment that she would consider bagging her senior basketball season to prepare for college hockey."Right now it's just because I really like my team and I love my coaches," she said. "I just stayed with my friends. I like playing it. I feel in control when I'm playing it. I'm confident out there."How a youngster chooses to play hockey and basketball and excel at both while maintaining a 3.8 grade-point average seems a mystery, until you learn the family history. Her mom, Lisa, was a sensational basketball player at Dearborn Fordson, while her dad, Tom, played hockey, is the hockey coach at Michigan State and happened to own some hockey arenas when their five children were growing up."Andie loved it from the first day she did it," her father said. "She was very passionate about it. When you have -- at the time -- four kids, a lot of times you just do what the others do. Well, the oldest was playing hockey, and the other two older than her were playing basketball, so she was a gym rat, too."She was a gym rat who became a college-caliber basketball player."She loved basketball; she just loves to compete," her father said. "Her other sisters played basketball, and my wife loves basketball. I like basketball. When it was basketball season, she was playing that, too."In an age in which so many parents are forcing their children to specialize in one sport, Anastos' father is the opposite."One of the reasons I always coached Andie and my other kids is I wanted not only my kids but other kids, too, to have a chance to play other sports," he said. "The seasons overlap, and I had to decide when I was in high school between playing hockey and basketball, and I remember how difficult the decision was. I wanted them to find what they were passionate about, and you can't do that if you don't have an opportunity to try other things."Anastos agrees with her father, who she says wasn't exactly a hoops star."All my older sisters played basketball and so did my mom and my dad, but my dad was awful at basketball," she said. "He told me that his coach told him his job was not to shoot. He was not allowed to shoot the basketball."Anastos, on the other hand, is averaging 19.2 points, 9.4 rebounds and 5.2 assists. After scoring 26 points against Farmington Hills Mercy, Anastos poured in 29 points Tuesday in a victory over Birmingham Marian."Where she's really good is if she gets it in the open court, she's just real tough to stop," Mercy coach Gary Morris said. "She can go around people, and she's real creative around the basket in finishing. We tried not to let her get the ball. Once she gets going, good things are going to happen for her."Good things happen to Anastos on and off the court and ice, but she has worked hard to earn her acclaim in both sports."You would never know by her effort or performance that she is playing two sports," her father said. "And she doesn't get any pass. When she's at basketball, she's all in. When they run, she runs. When she goes to hockey, when they skate, she skates. There's no special consideration."Anastos was a good hockey player at the Tier II level and eventually began to dominate at the Tier I level, becoming a top recruit at center. She laughs at the suggestion she is a center because that is closest to being a point guard in hockey."I play there because I'm awful at skating backwards," she said. "My coach now makes fun of me for it. I'm not awful, but if you'd see me skate backwards, you would know I'm a forward. You can just tell."You can also just tell she's a basketball player, one who makes her teammates better."She's got an 'it' factor about her," Ladywood coach Anthony Coratti said. "There's a thousand things that make her good. Her competitive nature is the highest thing. She knows how to play the game; she knows how to play sports."But there is more to Anastos than just what she can do on the court and the ice. That "it" factor Coratti mentioned helps bring her teammates together."She's one of the most upbeat, positive people," said Jenna Anastos, her older sister who played basketball at Northwood and is a Ladywood assistant. "She had to miss one practice because she had a tournament up in Toronto, and our energy was low because she wasn't here. She always brings the girls up. She's a positive energy. She lights up any room she walks into."She can also light up a scoreboard and turn on the red light behind the goalie. And playing two sports simultaneously hasn't had an adverse effect on her grades."I try to get as much done in school as far as homework goes," she said. "When I have to study for stuff, I find time, usually right after school, but I can do it after everything. I don't mind staying up late."Anastos said she doesn't need to take naps during the day and has come to enjoy her hectic schedule, which will come to an end in a few months when she will be left without a sport this spring for the first time in recent memory."People may want me to play lacrosse," she said, "but I may want to relax."Finally.Contact Mick McCabe: 313-223-4744 or mmccabe@freepress.com. SAN FRANCISCO - Ambassador Chris Stevens' stepfather said Wednesday Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has reached out to his family to offer her sympathies about the deadly Sept. 11 raid on the consulate in Libya that killed his stepson, but offered them no privileged information about the adequacy of diplomatic security. As Clinton testified louis vuitton bags before Congress about the department's missteps leading up to the assault at the U.S. outpost in Benghazi, the family avoided discussions of how to keep diplomats safe and focused instead on Clinton's personal efforts to express her regrets through meetings and missives. We're very aware of her sympathy because of our contact with her and the way she has connected with us, said Stevens' stepfather Bob Commanday, of Oakland. It's a tragedy and nothing that is said or done can bring him back, so we are just going on with life. In her last formal congressional testimony on Capitol Hill as America's top diplomat on Wednesday, Clinton once again took full responsibility for the State Department's shortfalls preceding the evening attack that killed Ambassador Stevens and three other Americans. Her voice cracking at one point, Clinton said the experience was highly personal and insisted that the department was moving swiftly and aggressively to strengthen security at U.S. mis louis vuitton portefeuile sions worldwide.Commanday said he had not yet heard Clinton's testimony, but said the family has avoided commenting on diplomatic security leading up to the attack that killed his stepson. We have always totally avoided this discussion about the adequacy, inadequacy, blame, whatever, of the situation that happened because we only know what we read in the paper and we have no privileged information, Commanday said in a telephone interview. We have no role in this. We are victims. Stevens, 52, grew up in a family of doctors and lawyers in Piedmont near Oakland, and showed an early interest in foreign policy. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1982, and learned Arabic when he subsequently volunteered for the Peace Corps as an English teacher in a remote village in Morocco's High Atlas Mountains. After earning a law degree at the University of California's Hastings College of Law in 1989, he joined the foreign service with early postings in Saudi Arabia, Syria, Israel and Egypt. He was dispatched to Benghazi during heavy fighting in April 2011 to set up an office to work with the Libyan opposition.___Follow Garance Burke on Twitter at
